The Grunt family: Chapter 3 - Ripp's Secret

1.
When choosing a university, Ripp Grunt had three possible choices. He could have gone for Sim State University in nearby Pleasantview, Academie Le Tour in Veronaville, or La Fiesta Tech in his home city of Strangetown. Looking through the prospectuses, Sim State seemed far too sleepy, while the Tech was simply too close to home. So he'd decided on the Academie, where his friends, Johnny Smith and Ophelia Nigmos, were already students. Unfortunately, it was also the same university where his brother, Tank, was entering his third year - but Ripp figured it was a big enough campus that they probably wouldn't run into each other.

After moving into the same residence as his friends, pretty much the first thing he had to do was change his clothes. Although he'd got into the taxi wearing his finest suit, for some reason, as he'd aged into a Young Adult, the gods had bestowed him with the dorkiest grey t-shirt and shorts combination he'd ever seen. He had to do something about that.

2.
So Ripp headed out to the Campus Boutiques in an attempt to improve his style. To his embarrassment, the only other customer in the shop was also the most attractive young man he'd ever seen. Robin (formerly known as Peyton) Curtin was red-haired, with cheekbones to die for. Ripp said hello to him, and burbled inanely (insanely?) about schoolwork and learning to study...

3.
Robin was keenly interested in fashion, and had little interest in talking to a total dork. But Ripp really wanted to talk to him. Possessed with his Army General father's ability to Command, he enlisted Robin in his Quest For Better Garments - and found out his phone number. It seemed that Robin had managed to avoid the dorms, and was staying in one of the rental houses on the east side of the campus.

4.
Despite having spent a semester at college already, Ripp found Johnny and Ophelia barely changed - still together, still seeming more like best friends than lovers (like he could talk, with his amazing lack of experience). Both Johnny and Ophelia were studying Physics: "To make it easier to catch up if one of us oversleeps", Ophelia had told him, giggling. Shouldn't they be sleeping together? Ripp wasn't sure.

5.
Their fourth dorm-mate was Blair Mace, who had grown into a stunning young man. Blessed with Elvish genetics, Blair's family had settled in Veronaville, where rumours suggested the King and Queen of Faeryland spent their summers. Blair himself liked to travel, and had previously been one of Strangetown's itinerant Townie population. Ripp was impressed by his long, luxuriant ponytail, and thought he could stand getting to know Blair better - if things didn't work out with Robin, of course.
